ahhh experimenting with supplemental weft with my at home loom.
what do you think his name should be? im thinking niles. in honor of it being a nilus leclerc?

FINALLY got the loom that i bought back in may from mica up and running! the problem was i did not have money for a dent reed, warping board, bobbins, shuttles, winder, etc etc etc, but while im in school i can check all these things out. SO i warped on and brought it home and threaded and now im realllly excited.   !
the warp you are seeing is for 2 plaid and yellow scarfs. 1 foe Di[e]ce boutique and one for the mica art market!

that is unless YOU want one :D  100% woooool.

And I got a job, finally. I clean rich bitch's houses.
And I got a car, finally. Its a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra.  Yea. for the classy old lady in all of us. it was $750. hahaha.

so i found wool in my basement from freshman year felting...........

Thursday, August 6, 2009

OHGOSH i just got back from penland today. this is only a little bit of the work ive made and the fun times ive had but:

ill just say how amazing catharine ellis and Joy boutroup are, how much tey know, and how much i learned in their workshop.

I watched a jaquard loom weave a piece of cloth that i designed and then vat disharged with a shibori pattern
made a double weave with wool and cotton and felted the wool,
made my first woven shibori (twice)
and made my first deflected doubleweave (that i traded for a cool ring that my friend made.)
so 5 weavings in two weeks > 3 weavings in one semester.

penland is one the best things ever invented.

Sunday, June 28, 2009

im going to Penland in 14 days for 2 weeks in north carolina! and im going to weave amazing things and its gonna be really intensive and great!

this is the justification i have for not doing anything besides knitting a bunch. so there.

Hi, my name's Dain. I knit socks exclusively for dwarves.

and on the hottest days of summer,
i make cozy winter socks.

ijust realized i never posted this. its my spring weaving final. i kind of dont like i. because of the size, the fuck-up in the top right hand corner with the serger,
and like, the "line quality." with pick-up, you draw the image as you weave, so when you do bigger images like this that you dont see till youre done, most people graph it out first. but like, raphing is boring and weaving is fun...=FAIL.

but i dunno. im confident enough in it to post it here, it might be part of my portfolio some day. i want to weave borders for it. idk.

Sunday, May 31, 2009

ok so:

my weaving final,
my screenprinting final, i posted this before but this is a better picture.

and what im doing now that i have nothing else to do. i gave this tapestry to someone. but im making more :D

WELLL i still have work to post from finals but im really lazy right now.

i unfortunately am not working at urban outfitters anymore (or anywhere for that matter...)
i mean its not unfortunate since i hate urban outfitters but its unfortunate since im not getting an income now...
but schools over :)
so i have not had a job or class all week and ive been slowly dying in my bed. and going out a lot too. i deserve it, i think.

so i have a vision. the vision is called

 I AM CATS
 (and i can't help it.)

so that's what i'll be working on this summer i guess. not sure what it entails yet, except this cool appliqued banner im making with a screenprint from last semester.

also, I need $300 is equipment in order to start weaving on my new loom. i dont know when thats ever going to happen since im not making any money.

I HAVE MY OWN LOOM THANK YOU LOOM GODS.

i purchased a 4 harness, 6 treadle nilus floor loom from mica for $150 this morning. im super super excited. i will be weaving this summer. im also moving june 1st but with no current ideas where to. so while looking for my new apartment, i will have my enormous floor loom in mind. its so big im so excited!

they had an 8 harness 16 treadle double back beam mccomber for sale for $200, but not only was it $50 more, but like every single thing was wrong with it. so i settled on this as my first loom. plus i will be in weaving again next year and can use the 8 harnesses there.
4 harnesses are capable of like a lot of stuff so whatever.

IM SO CLOSE TO BEING DONE SCHOOL i just felt the need to update now. I have a paper due in an hour that i am only half way done, so i will leave you with shitty images of my material construction final, and then go to my last folk art class.
this is a double cloth weaving made into a bookbag. the amazinnng thing about weaving is that this is not sewn together. i wove these peices of fabric on top of each other and they were connected on the sides the entire time. the opening was also not cut, but woven in like that. I THINK THATS SO COOL! its stuffed.

COLOR BLIND TEST SCREENPRINT.
its not done, ive got finishing touches, but the printing part is,
its 7 colors, and i cant tell if you can see it in this picture or not, because alas, i am colorblind.
there should be a 6 though.
yea, it was fuckin hard.

and its a huge piece of cloth.

i havent updates in so lonnnng,
its because ive been so busy with finals and you know. the whole deal.

well. the blue and yellowwas a weaving for material construction, the "im gonna explode part" is dimensional and is stuffed, if you weave you know what that..means...

the blue and white one was just a sampler but i thought it was cute so its on my wall. i dont know what that thing in the middle is i guess a cactus or something..

so mica gave me $3000 for portugal. out of $5000. thats...kind of an amazing offer and more than they really give out. annet couwenberg(sp?) really pulled some strings for me to get that much but.
guess what, i still cant go! $2000 plus flight money is so much money. plus its like in a month! maybe i would have even had the tiniest chance of going if i knew ahead of um now.
whatever. also i still dont know what classes i want to take next semester and registration is tomorrow.

also i want to take a shower roommate get out of the bathroom. AND im moving june 1st but i dont know to where.
SEE HOW MUCH IS GOING ON!

this is for nicole!

SCORE i got into Penland school of crafts in north carolina.
im taking a 2 week weaving class class hand weaving and finishing. its an intermediate course,
& i got a full work-study scholarship.

its lame that i have to work there but. there were only 24 full work studies, and over 200 partial work studies. so. im happy about it.

ive been in a sort of rut lately, so this is the encouragemtn i need to keep on goinnnn with weaving. also the material construction weaving that i posted and the pickup doublecloth final for weaving color and pattern are being woven at the same time, and all of this weaving at the same time makes my portfolio fullll ! im really happy right now.

my weaving for material construction. the words are actually inflated. dimensionally. i love double cloth

AND why wouldnt you have a blog if you were in art school?
uh it's called the 21st century,
communicating thoughts,
and being an artist that's up to date.

^ my response to somebody's obnoxious facebook update.

its done! had crit yesterday, went really well.
ok it is almost 3 yards by 1 yard wide. so its really big...but you cant really tell from this photo. it goes from almost my ceiling to my floor.

also it was based on this blog:

Sunday, March 22, 2009

ok, "official" pictures, finally. i have been mega busy. and i still am. My weaving is due tomorrow at 4, i feel like im...halfway done, and i have work until 7. itll happen, i swear.
SO posted are one of my prints, and a weaving in progress picture. the weaving is a yard wide, approximately. uh, not sure how long it is, but its atleast 3 yards, when its finished...it was supposed to be 5, dont know if thats happening yet....
i have two other prints that i had to do over spring break, theyll be posted some day. i will probably so excited to get this weaving off of the loom and take 20 pictures of it, so probbly i will post later this week.

Annet Cowenberg really wants me to go to Portugal this summer with the fibers summer travel intensives. I mean, I really do too, but not for $5000. Not sure whats going on with that yet, i am applying tomorrow though. I also applied for Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. For a class with Joy boutrup and Catherine Ellis, called Weaving & Finishing: Hand and machine. I hope I can go. If they are both a yes (which is like a 20% chance right now), then that will be my entire summer,
and on the +, if i am in different places I will not have to find a place to live until august.

I really like Architecture in Helsinki. Have you heard them? Also I am deathly excited for Far, Regina Spectors new album, coming out in June. I will have to admit that I was not pleased with Begin to Hope so much. But I have to be optimistic. Regina brings back great memories and she used to be my favorite back in high school times. Lately whenever I hear her music I have to roll my eyes. But, we'll see.

soon i will be done. and also spring break will be done soon. that is sad. i think ive been working harder than when it is not spring break.

but atleast i have cleo to come home to.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

yay i finally started!

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

i have not posted in almost a month. !
im too busy making work to be posting work.
no im just really lazy when it comes to taking pictures.
im still not making a real post right now.
right now i am:
screenprinting 3 pieces of cloth that are 2 yards long each, and have a common theme. they are due the friday after spring break. i will be working on them all of spring break.
&
a 5 yard by 1 yard weaving. that is a monster of a weaving, p.s. . ive had tons and tons of issues with it already and i havent even got the loom completely dressed. hopefully i will spend like 2 more hours with it before it is ready to go to work.  hopefully.

ive also been off having a life and working.
here is a very very bad photo of my weaving. its linen and rayon.

Thursday, February 19, 2009

i have not been posting regularly lately! there have been a lot of changes in life lately, so i hope to get back to normal. or not so normal. i hope to get to a comfortable stage of different very soon.
there.

i want to post all of my new work so much. i knitted a wonderful pair of ...panties. but they're downstairs. and downstairs is two flights below where i am so thats not possible.

these are new prints though. the one with the cats is my re-do of my halfdrop. there is fabric underneath so it looks weird.
the other are my cheetahs! but im not completely done. i want to fill in the blank spaces. i need to measure a little more accurately. and i guess thats it right now..!
